Arianna had originally mentioned that her son had said he was going to have a sleep over at his friend’s house. Even though this was reported to the police at the time, Thomas still followed up with the boy’s friend, Brand, and his parents.

Whilst grieving for the child and anxious for his well being, they told him what they had told the police. Adrian had undertaken a dare to do an overnight fear test at their school, Laurence Academy of the Gifted, which is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of past students who died.

Most of the students who did this dare would merely sneak into the school, take a quick video to prove that they were there, and leave shortly afterwards, simply boasting that they spent the whole night there.

This proving one’s own courage was an open secret among many of the students, and even the teacher’s knew of it. It had always been forbidden due to concern of the safety of students, but there was always a broken window or door lock that people could use to break in.

The school was old and full of heritage, creating an eerie atmosphere after dark. From Thomas’ perspective, there was no reason why there wouldn’t be any ghosts at the school, although the vast majority of which were often harmless.

Brand stated that him and his friends had also left that night and staked out nearby, to make sure Adrian, the missing boy, actually went in and didn’t just pretend he did. However, Adrian never showed up. They all left around midnight and secretly returned to their homes unbeknownst of their parents at the time.

The problem in Thomas’ opinion was that Adrian left for the school that night, but never returned.

“Ah, this is such a pain~” Thomas cried out and dropped his notes helplessly onto his desk. “This tells me nothing. Let’s go interrogate some of the ghosts and see if any are lucid enough to notice a boy two weeks ago.”

Senna was sitting in front of the tv with an extravagantly decorated slice of cake as she turned her head and commented, “The police would have done a thorough investigation. We just need a copy of their report.”

“Of course, but I can’t request it. I am not a legal private investigator. Actually, maybe I can threaten Reeves to expose his corrupt practices if he doesn’t give me a copy of it.”

“Captain Reeves is an honest and upright man with a spotless record, how are you going to expose something that doesn’t exist?”

She responded with an eye roll as her gaze returned to the tv, which was playing some later afternoon cartoons.

“I just have to plant something. People get superstitious over the simplest things, after all.”

“The only thing you will accomplish is making a public display of your idiocy.”

Thomas seemed unperturbed and started making plans to extort his acquaintance in the police force with a smile. His methods ranged from threats, kidnapping, even an elaborate plan to steal and hold his entire wardrobe hostage until he acquiesced.

“Just beat him up until he talks,” Senna said as if it was the most casual thing in the world.

“I can’t do that, he is a friend.”

“Would that stop you?”

“Well, not particularly, but he is a useful friend at times.”

“Until the police are strong enough to actually do anything about you, I am sure he will remain a friend.”

“You make it sound as if he is only my friend because he is forced to!”

Thomas slapped his palm on his desk in outrage, at which point the half fallen fae girl turned her head and gave him a look of mock surprise.

“Have you only figured that out now?”

“Fine! Who needs to wait for him, the local police station only has a couple of staff overnight. We will sneak in and just take what we need!”

Late in the night, Thomas and Senna stood outside the local police station dressed in all black.

“Why do I have to wear this ridiculous outfit?” Senna’s brow was furrowed in displeasure.

She was wearing black tights, a black hoodie, and black beanie on her head. She truly looked like a burglar at the moment, except for her half blonde, half dark crimson hair that stood out.

Thomas wore matching attire to Senna, but wore a big grin on his face unlike the former.

“Appearances are important. We need to look the part to be in the mood.”

“I find myself even less in the mood.”

“Nonsense. Now, we need to find a point of entry… Ah, there.”

The police station still had several lights on, the occasional silhouette moving past. The front entrance was still open, but most of the police department had closed. This was only a small station, so they had neither the manpower nor funds to fully operate around the clock.

Thomas and Senna moved extremely fast, dashing to the building and running a couple of strides up the wall before latching onto one of the windowsills.

“Tch, locked,” Thomas clicked his tongue before a faint white luminescence coated his arms and he wrenched open the window forcefully, the lock snapping with an audible crack.

“Subtle,” Senna sarcastically commented as she climbed into the office behind him.

Despite the dim lighting from the distant street lights coming through the window, the pair could easily make out the details of the objects in the room.

One wall was lined with glass panel shelving units, all of which was filled up with either books on law, old paper reports and binders, or the rare martial technique books that taught some of the more esoteric sword and gun techniques.

Many of these techniques required spiritual qi to execute, but all police officers were forced to train their bodies under the state controlled cultivation technique. It was very weak, but it was designed in such a way that with some basic assistance, even the most untalented individuals should be able to at least reach the first stage of Qi Condensation.

This training gave them an overwhelming advantage over petty criminals, whilst also opening up the ability to learn some more esoteric arts for defense and attack. In the event they were forced to suppress a superhuman, mage, supernatural creature or something that was otherwise more powerful than a standard human, it also substantially increased their survivability and saved countless lives that would have otherwise been lost.

There was also some exotic statues and modern furniture alongside a large mahogany desk near the window that held a considerable value.

“Where do they keep the hard copies of their case files?” Thomas asked in the darkness whilst opening the cupboards and pulling out handfuls of folders, only to discard them on the floor when they weren’t what he was looking for.

Both him and Senna had handheld torches that they used for searching documents. Just because they could see in the dark didn’t mean they could read text printed onto paper in the dark.

Senna stopped to think before responding, “Wherever they keep information on their open cases. It has only been two weeks, it should still be with them.”

“In that case, let’s split up and look for it.
