The Grade 10 students in the Modern Magic class were currently studying how to create and dispel scents, a seemingly simple idea but very complicated when it came to designing magical systems to manipulate the atmosphere around them.

The display board at the front had complex diagrams of the molecular composition of the atmosphere, and how some particles can be dealt with by magic, or magicule particles created such as to imitate the scent of roses.

One such student in this class was Jack Riddle, who was currently sleeping with his face in his arms on his desk.

The teacher, Mr. Sampson, noticed this and crept up beside the sleeping student with a forced smile on his face. The rest of the class watched in a bated silence as they barely restrained their smirks.

Mr. Sampson leaned over and seemingly casually placed his hand on the desk with a disproportionately large slapping sound.

“Jack, is my lesson so bor-”

“THIS EMPEROR WILL NOT BOW! GODS? A BUNCH OF COWARDS!!”

Upon being awoken, the student known as Jack Riddle shot up to his feet and roared towards the ceiling in a tone full of wrath.

Half the class watched with their jaws dropped in disbelief, including Mr. Sampson, while the other half were forced to turn their heads and cover their mouth with their hands in a desperate struggle to contain their laughter.

It took Jack a moment to realize where he was before his eyebrows rose and he hastily looked around the room before focusing on his own hands.

“This… this is impossible…”

Mr. Sampson seemed to have recovered his bearings from the unexpected outburst and asked with a forced smile almost mockingly, “Do you need to visit the nurse’s office, Emperor Jack?”

Jack was still in his own train of thought and gazed teacher with a gaze of superiority that didn’t match his position as a student.

“Yes… I shall go.”

He silently left the classroom under the wide-eyed gazes of the other students. His ancient memories had faded with time and thus he no longer knew where the nurse’s office was located, but he felt the need to calm his mind and try recall as much as he could.

Being reborn in the fantasy world of Arder where magic was the propagator of civilization advancement, he had lived a life full of struggles. In that world, there was a feudalistic system which was rife with corruption and power struggles.

The people trained in mystical styles known as the Mana Arts.

In his former world, mages trained by using magicore devices to transform the natural mana into a force that could be used to cast one’s Mana Rings within their body. Those Mana Rings would then constantly generate mana that could be used for casting spells.

Mana Arts, on the other hand, involved directly absorbing the ambient mana and using one’s body as the fire and forge to transform it into a vein-like circuit within their body. The shape and design of this circuit deeply affected how well one could use certain types of spells and how powerful they would be.

He had been shocked at this as he had learned in his former life that the direct absorption of mana into the body was impossible for humans. If you did, you would suffer from mana poisoning and almost inevitably die an excruciating death.

The mages in this world were not only much stronger than his previous world, but the practice of Mana Arts would strengthen the body and increase life span too, just like cultivation.

Having previously lived a miserable and poor life, eventually dying, he was desperate to live and chased after strength like a demon possessed. A thousand years passed and he reached heights thought to be impossible.

Reaching the stage known as Mage Emperor, he could raise oceans with one hand while flattening mountain ranges with a wave of the other.

Alas, his power encroached upon the immortal realm of the gods and attracted the ire of the deities.

Refusing to bow, he resisted their control and fought back. The battle was not long lived as the combined might of the gods was impossible to resist.

Jack had thought himself dead at that point, throwing out his last curses at the deities above. Little did he expect he would instead return to his past last, a month before his death nonetheless.

He may have lost all his strength as a result, but he could easily regain it. With his thousand years of experience and plethora of Mana Arts, he would become even stronger than his previous life.

He didn’t just lose his strength, he also left his school bag and books back in the classroom.

A month later.

Senna adjusted her new uniform with a degree of discomfort. The previous school she attended had a strict dress code, but it wasn’t an enforced uniform like this one, nor did it force separate uniforms for study and phys ed classes.

Her pleated skirt was a maroon and white checker, whilst the dress shirt was plain white. There was also a maroon and black necktie that matched the near black school blazer, but considering it was summer, the blazer was left hanging in the wardrobe.

The shoes were a standard dress shoe and would clack on the ground whenever she walked, but she quickly adjusted how she was walking to actively suppress that noise.

Thomas suddenly burst through the door into her room with a cheesy grin on his face before commenting, “Just look at her, my daughter ready to go off on her first day of school. I feel so proud!”

“I will snap your arms and legs off if you keep being annoying.”

“Don’t be like that~ I even made your lunch for you.”

Senna rolled her eyes and simply walked around him, but he quickly caught her in an embrace and pulled her back against him.

“You are getting too touchy,” She coldly stated while tilting her head up to look at him from the corner of her eye. “Have you forgotten your place as my food source.”

He merely chuckled before pressing his forearm against her mouth.

“You haven’t eaten in nearly a week and I can see your hunger. You are off to a new school with new challenges, so don’t go on an empty stomach.”

Thomas felt the fae girl’s razor sharp teeth piercing into his arms and start sucking. She raised her hands and carefully held his arm in place whilst she ate her fill before pushing it away and licking the traces of blood off her lips.

“I am still annoyed that you transferred me to another school just to investigate it, you know.”

“That’s not the only reason~”

Senna gave him a look of extreme doubt. Having known him for over ten years, she believed his true thoughts were overly simplistic and lacked any deeper level of consideration or reasoning. He was someone living his current life on impulse mode, just doing whatever he wanted with no sense of danger or fear of consequences.

On her way out of the store, she felt that her school bag was heavier than expected and pulled out the culprits behind the additional weight; a magic wand and a chiller lunch box designed to keep food fresh. There was a sticky note on the lunch box that read:

I have packed you a lunch of your favorite things! Good luck on your first day!

P.S I slipped in a bribe for you to use to become friends with the popular kids

There was no explanation for the wand, but considering the school taught magic, she should at least have the proper equipment.

Spinning the latch and quickly opening the lunchbox to peek inside revealed several cream-filled pastries alongside some sugar coated lollies that she particularly favored. Stuffed into the side, however, were several cigarettes which is apparently what Thomas intended for a ‘bribe’.

Scrunching her nose at the dry smell of tobacco and destroying the evidence until it was dust, she slowly slipped the lunch box back in her bag before departing for school.

Her skirt also had a couple pockets which she had stealthily used to store an assortment of small sweets in wrappers.

She took one out and popped it in her mouth. After sucking on it for a moment however, she had a change of mind and retrieved it from her mouth before flicking it across the road and directly into the path of a sweeper bot.

“Please don’t litter, keep the streets clean. Thank you.”

The robot spoke aloud in its synthetic voice as it altered directions just enough that it picked up the discarded lolly.

The distance to Senna’s new school was a walk of over an hour for a normal individual, but she could easily run that distance in several minutes. This was still her moving slower than a pace she would even consider to be leisurely.

Unlike when she was investigating Laurence Academy of the Gifted overnight with Thomas, the scenary was entirely different during the daytime.

The shadowkin had completely vanished from the dark corners of the campus grounds and the golden morning sun sifted through the leaves on the trees, bringing about a feeling of warmth and life. The patrol bots had also retreated into the school and stationed themselves around the heavily protected library.

Instead, students of all sizes and hair styles strolled into the school. Some walked alone, others in groups of five or six. Some waited outside for their friends before waving them down and increasing their group size.

What Senna noticed first that they were not very strict in abiding by the school uniform.

Yes, they were technically wearing school uniforms. However, their neck ties were loose or simply missing, and while their shoes were black for the most part, they definitely weren’t school dress shoes.

Another thing was that almost everyone had expensive designer bags and wore a lot of accessories. She saw bracelets, rings, piercings, fluorescent beaded hair attachments, and a range of other small items she didn’t even recognize.

One thing she picked up on was that they were all wealthy. Be it a combination of their appearance, gait, or actions, she was very clued on to this aspect of humans. It was even more obvious by the self driving top brand hover cars dropping them off.

This was a side effect of living with someone who was extremely irresponsible and would spend all their money on video games rather than paying their mortgage or utilities.

Senna’s appearance at the school entrance was also noticed, many students turning to look at the unfamiliar face as she entered.
